The Great Migration

Feel the Thrill of the Serengeti Migration

The Serengeti Great Wildebeest Migration is one of the most extraordinary natural spectacles on Earth, attracting travelers from all corners of the globe. This annual journey, involving over 1.5 million wildebeest, along with hundreds of thousands of zebras and gazelles, is a dramatic and cyclical movement across the Serengeti and into Kenya's Maasai Mara. Driven by ancient survival instincts, these animals embark on a perilous migration covering over 800 kilometers (500 miles), encountering predators, rivers, and harsh terrains.

Migration Stages by Season

December – March: The Calving Season (Southern Serengeti) As the migration reaches the Ndutu Plains in the southern Serengeti, wildebeest herds settle for the calving season. During this period, around 500,000 calves are born in just a few weeks. The abundance of young animals attracts predators, creating intense action as lions, cheetahs, and hyenas seize the opportunity. This is an excellent time to witness predator-prey interactions.

April – June: The Long Trek North As water sources dry up, the herds begin moving northwards in search of lush grasslands. The wildebeest form long lines stretching across the plains, a mesmerizing sight. This phase often includes dramatic encounters with predators, as the herds make their way toward the Grumeti River.

July – September: River Crossings (Western Serengeti & Maasai Mara) One of the most exhilarating parts of the migration occurs as the herds attempt to cross the Grumeti and Mara rivers. This stage is marked by high drama, as wildebeest plunge into crocodile-filled waters, with many losing their lives in the struggle. The river crossings are a top attraction, capturing the raw power of nature.

October – November: Return to the Serengeti As the short rains return, the herds make their way back into the Serengeti. The grasslands revive, offering a fresh start and setting the stage for the next calving season in the southern plains.
